After effects

 Task 1-Cinematic trailer:

Task 2-Alien Spaceship:

Task 3-Barrel on fire:

Task 4-Sample footage of title sequence edit:

1. What were you asked to make?

We were asked to create 3 animations on after effects by watching the tutorials that helped guide me step by step throughout how to use the effects and layers and where I needed to use those effects on my own project in order to create my very own visual. We first had to learn the basics of these effects that were used in order to implement them into our own title sequence for later use. Our first task was however, a Cinematic trailer which where we followed along a tutorial with additional downloadable packs in order to make it our self's whilst following along with the tutorial. The shorts cinematic trailer footage we made consisted only a title which was "Cinematic Trailer" with additional details in the background such as the the the bright light under the word "Trailer" to make it stand out, as well as making it as if its set in space with white specs traveling across the screen in the back as if they're stars. And lastly making the title have a metallic effect as if its reflecting the background.

Next up we had to create a fictional spaceship leaving Earth on After Effects. We were asked to watch this tutorial and follow along on how to make an illusion of making an actual spaceship leaving Earth whilst someone is "recording" with additional camera shake to show that it is someone videoing the spaceship on After Effects. We also had to make it as if it was on news, to make it look as legit as possible as it has never been "seen" before on Earth. Overall was by far the simplest edit out of the three.

Lastly, we were asked to create a video of a barrel on fire whilst a dude is standing behind the fire. This effect consisted many details especially making as if light from the fire is shown on the person to make it more realistic by giving it that glow effect. The barrel also had a glow effect also that was also done my self by following the tutorial to make it stand out even more. I've also decided to make the fire more green to change things up a bit rather than keeping the normal fire colours.

2. How might this be useful to making your own title sequence?

All these tutorials which led me into doing it my self has given me useful tips when it comes to effects and even layers to implement them in my own title sequence. This has given my useful tips and tricks as well as giving me some more knowledge on how those effects work and how they can be implemented in my own title sequence project. This is great as I'll be able to produce a high quality finished product with the skills I've been taught and the skills I already have.

3. Which font did you use, why?

As of fonts, only two out of the three edited effects had fonts. The ones that had fonts were the cinematic trailer and the space ship leaving Earth. Those two however, had different fonts when it came to fitting into that specific genre of the clip and how to make it stand out towards the audience in order to draw their attention when reading it. Starting with my Cinematic Trailer effect, I used a font called "Azonix" for my title "Trailer" as it gives it that big attention of its style and being the biggest word out of the two. It also had a much better look compared to the other word as it was the biggest out of the two. The other font that was used in that edit was called "Bankgothic" a font that was slightly similar to "Azonix" but stands out the least as it was the smallest word out of the two and the word is "Cinematic". Reason why it is the smallest as its not the part that's meant to be the one to catch the audiences attention but still has a meaning behind it for the bigger word.

Here are the fonts used for the Cinematic trailer:

The other edit that had fonts was the Spaceship leaving Earth. This font however, is a standard font that is already in After Effects which was implemented onto my edit for the breaking news headline with a sentence. The font is called "Arial" a standard font which works perfectly for the news report as for a news report they always have basic fonts for the titles and headlines as its not supposed to be fancy but more for being professional and for being serious. "Breaking News" was the only one that was coloured black to show its importance of some that has happened which also reflects on focusing the importance.

Here is the font that was used:

4. How might a different font/look suit a different audience/film genre?

Titles can vary depending on what sort of movie and genre it is to the target that specific target audience. However, the fonts are not to just target the audience but also to its genre of the film, For instance a font for a futuristic film would have a SCI-FI font. Reason why most of the futuristic films have a SCI-FI font is to show its reasoning by reflecting back to what type of genre the film is. Not only that but the effect and detail of the font itself can also help target older audiences such as 30 year old and even target teenagers. The whole robotic technological feel gives something for the younger generation to look up to see to see what the future could hold. Overall the fonts would explain what type of genre it will be. Another example is a font that horror movies would use with some type of horrifying detail to make it stand out and also to relate back to its purpose of the films genre. Such as giving a blood effect to resemble death which straight away links to the films genre since blood is commonly shown in horror films.

5. Did you need any help? If so, who did you turn to - peer/teacher/google etc?

Or did you solve it yourself with some playing around?

Overall, I had no issues following the tutorials as it was self explanatory and simple to follow. The only issue there was is that they were running an older version of Adobe which sometimes could confuse me slightly as the part where the person shows on the tutorial might not show for me already so I would have to manually find it my self which I do manage to as its straight forward. Other than that no issues.

6. What did you learn?

Thought-out these days and weeks, I've learnt many useful skills that I've never done before in After Effects such as literally removing the green screen in Adobe After effects as I never knew that was possible in After Effects until now. Not only that but by adjusting the images colour, tone, contrast and even using the curves tool to help adjust the whole colour in certain areas of the image. Those were some out of the other lot but this however, has given me a much better understanding on what I am able to use for my own title sequence and to what I could do to make it really stand out when finished. Adobe After effects as a whole is a software that I don't always use compared to Adobe premier pro but this gives me a challenge and will allow me to show off my skills of what I've managed to learn throughout these weeks with these new skills.

7. Detail 2-3 AE skills that you learned and how-tos that are transferrable to other projects? eg how to pre-compose and why this might be useful.

My first skill that I've learned throughout these 3 tutorials throughout these weeks is a tool called curves. This however, is a must as it helps to create more exposure or detail which can be enhanced depending on the graph for your curves and also by how how much exposure of black you want for in a certain area. Not only black but there is another option for other RGB colours such as green, blue, red, ect... This is transferable to other projects as this can help enhance some more detail towards the image.

My second skill that I've learnt throughout these weeks is a skill that involves in removing unwanted parts from that specific layer in order to look more professional and tidy. The tool is called the pen tool where it allows me to click on certain spots until I create a fully connected shape which will clear out anything inside of that shape and un touch the parts. You can also feather it out which will help smooth the cuttings out which helps blending it in to not make the cut look obvious. This is transferable to other projects as it helps cut away unwanted parts in an image.

8. Watch some varied title sequences and choose three to map out on Illustrator or Photoshop, on a timeline (I will explain this one!)
